Urban agriculture
Urban agriculture refers to all agricultural production activities (crops and livestock) carried out in urban or peri-urban environments. It encompasses a wide range of practices, from home gardens to high-tech vertical farms. Protean agriculture
Urban agriculture takes many forms, adapted to the constraints and opportunities offered by the urban environment. These include community gardens, shared spaces where residents collectively grow fruit, vegetables and herbs. These gardens, often managed by local groups or associations, encourage social exchange while producing local food.
Green roofs and walls are another essential form of agriculture: the roofs and facades of buildings are transformed into cultivable spaces, offering a dual function: producing food while improving the thermal insulation of buildings and bringing aesthetic benefits to the urban environment. Vertical farms, on the other hand, use multi-storey structures to grow plants indoors, optimizing available space. These farms rely on technologies such as LED lighting, hydroponics or aeroponics to maximize production in controlled environments.

The challenges of urban agriculture
Despite its many advantages, urban agriculture faces some major challenges.

And still on the "financial" front, another obstacle lies in the high initial costs of the technologies used, such as hydroponics or vertical farms, requiring major investments that can slow down their large-scale adoption.
Regulatory constraints also act as a brake. Some cities have not yet put in place a clear legal framework to encourage or regulate these practices, which complicates the development of projects.
Finally, access to resources, notably water and nutrients, can be problematic in certain urban areas where these elements are already under pressure.
